Our data sources
The Registry sources entity data from several categories of authoritative input:
- Provincial insurance regulator databases: The primary source. Canadian life and health insurance is regulated provincially (and federally for federally regulated insurers). Regulator databases contain licensed entities operating in each province or territory.
- Industry working group submissions: Industry associations and working groups contribute structured datasets identifying registered carriers, MGAs, and brokerages.
- Comparing public records: We compare information across sources to resolve differences and make profiles easier to understand.
- Public corporate records: For enrichment of legal names, operating history, and corporate structure.
How we check information
We look for organization details in public regulator records and other authoritative publications. Where a source link is available, it is shown on the organization profile so you can check the information yourself.
A profile in this Registry is an information record, not a licence or approval. The presence of an organization does not by itself confirm current authorization in every province.
Freshness
Each profile may show how recently its information was checked against an authoritative source:
- Current — Verified within the past 12 months from a provincial regulator or equivalent source.
- Stale — The verification is older than 12 months. The entity may still be active, but the data has not been recently re-confirmed.
- Unknown — No freshness information is available for this entity's primary data.
We are expanding freshness coverage across the Registry. At present, it is shown where a profile has a reference link to a regulator or another authoritative source.
What appears in the Registry
We publish organization profiles when their existence can be supported by authoritative public information. A published profile means the organization has been recorded in the Registry; it does not guarantee current licensing in any specific province.
For current licensing information, always check with the relevant provincial insurance regulator. Profile pages include links to regulator records when available.
The correction process
We welcome corrections from industry participants, registered organizations, and the public. Here's how it works:
- Submit a suggestion using the Suggest an Update form.
- The Registry review team checks the submission against our source information.
- If the correction is supported by authoritative evidence, the registry record is updated.
- If the submission cannot be verified, it is logged but not acted upon without further evidence.
- Submissions are reviewed before any change is made to a public profile.
